In this haunting episode of “Shadowed Trails,” host Robin Lane delves into the mysterious 1978 disappearance of Agnes Frye, a celebrated mountaineer and photographer who vanished while hiking alone in Washington’s remote Northern Cascades. Through a detailed timeline, Robin explores Agnes’s adventurous background, the cryptic clues she left behind—including a single, eerie photograph of a rotting tree—and the many theories that have emerged over the decades. Blending fact, folklore, and personal reflection, the episode asks: what really happened to Agnes Frye, and what secrets still lie hidden in the misty wilds of the Pickett Range? LISTENER COMMENTSRobinLane: Thank you all in advance for your thoughts, theories, and time. If you have family connections, old stories, or even dreams about Agnes Frye, please share them here or contact the show. Every clue counts. Stay curious, friends. MyMaineMan: Creepy case, I guess, but she probably just got lost. Happens all the time. Mike_87: This case has always stuck with me. I actually hiked that trail you mentioned last year and I swear I saw something in the trees. AssignedNowhere: Fell down. ZestyCombat: @MyMaineMan YOU SAY THIS ON EVERY EPISODE. EddieExplores: This story seriously gave me chills. The part about the single photo of the tree...it almost feels like some kind of warning or message. Anyone else think Agnes was trying to tell us something? LoreHunter: The way you described Agnes Frye makes me wish I could’ve met her. Sounds like a true adventurer. But sometimes those who push the boundaries find things the rest of us aren’t meant to see… N.F.Sense: Fascinating case. The symbolism of the rotting tree resonates with certain existentialist motifs. Adds a lot to the narrative. Excellent storytelling! MistyRidge: I can’t stop thinking about that journal entry: “Somewhere between the roots and the fog, there’s a story waiting to be found.” Gives me goosebumps. What if she DID find it? ZestyCombat: @N.F.Sense You know this all really happened... Right? Also, aren't you the weirdo from the ad? N.F.Sense: @ZestyCombat I see you have heard of me! Well, from a Sartrean perspective, the narrative we build around her absence is an act of meaning-making, a desperate attempt to impose form on the formless. Yet, existentially, the ‘event’ resists narration; it is a rupture, an un-story, a void where explanation collapses into nothingness. We’re left with the paradox: Agnes is both protagonist and ghost, her presence woven from the very absence we try to fill. In telling her story, we reveal the impossibility of ever truly telling it. Isn’t every mystery just a mirror for our own need to find patterns in the roots and the fog? ZestyCombat: @N.F.Sense What? OutThereAndBack: Agnes probably fell and her body was lost to the elements. The Cascades are brutal. But the part about local legends and “The Whisperer” gave me goosebumps. Love the way you blend fact and folklore. TashaReads:: This story is so sad, but also beautiful. It’s like Agnes became part of the landscape she loved. Amazing storytelling as always, Robin. Love your work! Load More Comments | Post New Comment
